The motion capture solution required for a Hollywood movie isn’t the same as the one to create a live avatar on your phone, however. There were more booths demonstrating tracking and motion capture than anything in the main hall, and all that tech came in different shapes and sizes and an interesting mix of hardware and software. Take the world of tracking and motion capture as another example. Everyone’s compositing tool can play back large files and color correct, composite, edit, track and deliver, so in the midst of a buzzy trade show, the differences feel far fewer than the similarities. (Blackmagic was running a hands-on class for 20 people at a time.) I’m a Flame artist, so I think that Autodesk’s offering is best, obviously. There were plenty of compositing demos from of all sorts of software.
That’s partly the problem for the people selling stuff at SIGGRAPH. You spend your whole career in one industry and I guess you all start to look more and more like each other. Roger’s new 6,500-square-foot studio includes four private offices, three editing suites, two conference rooms, an empty shooting space for greenscreen work, a kitchen and a lounge. Since the merger, the studio is already embarking on a number of projects, including major creative campaigns for Disney and Sony Pictures. The tools vary from project to project, but outside of the Adobe Suite, they also use Maxon Cinema4D, Autodesk Maya, Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve and Foundry Nuke. Roger uses Adobe Creative Cloud for most of its workflows. Roger now offers expanded talent and resources for projects that require branding, design, animation, VFX, VR/AR, live action and content development. The combined management team includes CD Terence Lee, CD Dane Macbeth, EP Josh Libitsky, director Steve Petersen, CD Ken Carlson and Sean Owolo, who focuses on business development.
The studios will retain the Roger name and operate at Roger’s newly renovated facility in Los Angeles. Creative agency Roger and full-service production company Big Machine have merged - a move that will expand the creative capabilities for their respective agency, brand and entertainment clients.
